10 Something Borrowed Ideas
Infusing sentimentality into your special day with cherished items
When it comes to weddings, some traditions may be outdated, but one that can be sentimental is having “something borrowed.” This tradition stems from the belief that borrowing something from a happily married relative or friend will bring good fortune to your marriage. Stay true to this ideal, or borrow an item to honor someone who has impacted your life.
Heirloom Jewelry
You likely plan on wearing jewelry, so why not borrow your aunt’s pearls you’ve long loved? Whether a necklace, ring, earrings, bracelet, watch or cufflinks, wearing a piece of jewelry that’s a loved one’s prized possession is a beautiful way to honor them. It becomes more special if it’s a piece they wore at their wedding or were gifted for an anniversary or monumental moment.
An Accessory
This could include shoes, a clutch, a tie or bowtie, a hair accessory, a veil, a brooch and more. Do you wear the same size shoe as your best friend or mom? Ask to borrow the shoes they walked down the aisle in. Maybe pinning a brooch to your dress isn’t your style, but if you love grandma’s collection, add one to your bridal bouquet. Whether from a loved one or a friend, a standout wardrobe piece will be special for them to see you wear.
A Dress or Suit
The ultimate honor would be to wear a loved one’s wedding dress or suit. If they are open to it and it’s your style, wear it down the aisle. If you want your own fashion moment, consider wearing the dress or suit for the rehearsal dinner or as your reception outfit. If this is still too much of a commitment, ask to take a piece of fabric from the garment to include in your look. Keep in mind that you might need alterations.
A Ring Pillow, Box or Flower Girl Basket
If you’re enlisting little helpers to introduce you to the aisle, consider borrowing a ring pillow, ring box or flower girl basket that was used at a friend or family member’s wedding. It would be all the better if it was used by a niece, nephew, cousin or other close little one.
Wedding Décor
Make your wedding special while saving money by borrowing décor that aligns with your theme. Consider your grandma’s crystal champagne flutes for your first cheers, your aunt’s linen napkin collection, vintage vases your mother has or any other special trinket that would add to your altar or tablescape.
A Recipe
Have your caterer incorporate a family recipe or family favorite dish. Whether remaking your family’s Sunday Italian feast or your mom’s secret cookie recipe for the dessert table, having cherished food is warming for the heart and pleasing to the stomach.
First Dance Song
Think how special it would be if your first dance song came on and your parents or grandparents realized it was the song they danced to at their own wedding. Get ready for the happy tears.
A Cake Topper or Cake Knife
One wedding-related tradition that hasn’t faded in popularity is cutting a cake or dessert at the reception. For this reason, cake toppers or cake knives are often passed down for generations, sealing the deal sweetly.
The Getaway Vehicle
Is your uncle a classic car collector? Does your cousin have a flashy sports car? Ride away in something iconic that belongs to someone in your inner circle.
